Acute Porphyria Drugs

A01AB22 - Doxycycline

Probably not porphyrinogenic
PNP

Rationale
Potent inhibitor of CYP3A4; MI-complex formation? Conflicting references. Several Swedish observations of non-porphyrinogenicity. Probably insignificant hepatic load in local dental use.
Chemical description
Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with alkylamino group used in local treatment of tooth-pocket infections. Mainly unmetabolized but CYPs appear to be involved to some extent since CYP-inducing drugs result in an increase in its metabolism. Inhibitor of CYP3A4 (MI-complex?). The concentration of the antibiotic in blood does not exceed 1 ug/ml.
